Synopsis: Steven Spielberg directed this drama, based on actual events, and beginning aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad in the year 1839. The film opens as African slaves violently take command of the ship, ending in their capture and imprisonment in New England. Former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman) considers the slaves to be freedom fighters, while property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey) argues that the slaves should actually be thought of as "stolen goods." Presiden Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) is up for reelection, and overturns the court's decision in favor of the Africans. John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins), the former president, gets involved in the case against his will when it goes on to the Supreme Court, and formulates an emotional defense. The film occasionally cuts away to young Queen Isabella in Spain, who later on debated the case with seven US presidents. The film is based on William A. Owens book "Black Mutiny: The Revolt on the Schooner Amistad."
