Summary: Sir Robert Chiltern is young and feeling daring. So, in an act of bold and perhaps daring recklessness, he gives an Austian baron some secret information from the Foreign Office, where he works. After that, he becomes a very rich man, and goes back to being the perfect employee he always was. Cut to a few years later, and he finds himself blackmailed by a woman - all he knows about her is that she happens to know his wife. He doesn't want to confess, but if he doesn't, what will the consequences be?

Synopsis: Sir Robert Chiltern is young and feeling daring. So, in an act of bold and perhaps daring recklessness, he gives an Austian baron some secret information from the Foreign Office, where he works. But he came with a price, and in return for his services, he received a significant amount of money that enabled him to live the life of a rich man, and do the things he'd always wanted to do. As a politician, this one secret he told was the only immoral thing he had ever done, and after receiving the money, he had gone back to being the ideal employee. Cut to a few years later, and suddenly his act of indiscretion comes back to haunt him. He finds himself blackmailed by a woman - all he knows about her is that she happens to know his wife. Sir Robert asks his best friend what he should do, and is told he should confess what he had done all those years ago. But he is very reluctant to taint the perfect image he has going with everyone, including his wife. Will his secrecy end up being the death of him?
