Summary: This internationally acclaimed film is based on a true story, and examines the perils involved in being a truly gifted musician. The title characters are sisters, and are both musical talents; one is a flutist and the other, a cellist. It's Jackie, the cellist, who has proven herself to be the genius, which of course provokes all sorts of competitive feelings. They grow apart - one becomes a star and the other, a housewife - until tragedy strikes and their lives come together again in unexpected ways.

The title characters are sisters, and are both musical talents; one is a flutist and the other, a cellist. It's Jackie, the cellist, who has proven herself to be the genius, which of course provokes all sorts of competitive feelings. Set in the 1950s, the film chronicles this sibling rivalry, not only in music, but in romance as well. When they were little they were the closest of friends, but Jackie, the younger sister, is the one to achieve fame as a musician and marries a star pianist and conductor. Hilary marries her childhood sweetheart and decides to stay home to raise children. The grass is always greener on the other side, and their lives seem ideal to one another. Before long, tragedy strikes and their lives come together again in unexpected ways.
