Great Expectations (1998)
Summary: Ethan Hawke stars as Finnegan Bell, who as an eight-year-old orphan with a talent for art, was left to his sister for care. He meets Estella, and a love is born; only Estella's aunt is determined to raise Estella to break men's hearts. Years later, the two meet again, and after one kiss, she vanishes, leaving Finn, now a painter, in distress. He can't even paint anymore. Until one day a Manhattan agent offers him his own show. Finn finally feels able to start his life anew ... that is, until Estella comes into his life yet again - with a boyfriend.

Synopsis: This movie is a stunning remake of Dickens' classic novel of the same name. The movie has been modernized and is set in the present, although the movie still retains a nostalgic quality, and much of the film is also presented as memory. Ethan Hawke stars as Finnegan Bell, who as an eight-year-old orphan with a talent for art, was left to his sister for care. After rescuing a chained escaped convict on the surf, he meets Estella, whom he plays with a lot; she's the neice of the mansion's rich owner, Ms. Dinsmoor. When the elderly lady sees Finn draw Estella's portrait she becomes determined to raise the young girl to be fierce with men. Cut to the 1980s, when the two are in their teens and reunited. After just one kiss, Estella disappears again, causing such despair in Finn that he can't paint again for seven years. But after awhile a Manhattan art agent, Jerry, shows up and tells Finn that if starts painting again he'll give him his own show - but he has to move to New York. Finn eagerly accepts and looks forward to the future. When he sees Estella again, however, and with a rich boyfriend, Finn finds himself trapped again, and he starts wondering why she holds such power over him.
