Synopsis: This latest film by Danish wunderkind and bad-boy Lars von Trier adds a whole new layer of meaning to the musical genre. Bjork stars as Selma, a poor Czech immigrant in small-town USA in the sixties. She's slowly going blind due to a genetic affliction that will also plague her young son if she can't afford a surgical procedure for him. So she slaves away at a factory with her best friend (Catherine Deneuve), and although she can barely see what she is doing, she is mesmerized by the sounds of the machinery. In her imagination, she lives out her fantasies as the whole workplace turns into a musical show in which she is the leading lady. Reality intervenes when her neighbor discovers her that she has money stashed away. He's in debt, so he steals her money and won't give it back to her unless she kills him. Selma makes some anguished decisions, and the rest of the film deals with the brutal consequences of her actions, in a blend of intense drama and escapist musical interludes. A truly original film.
