Rupert Everett Every so often someone comes along with the rare ability to steal the spotlight from the star. As Julia Roberts' homosexual editor and character foil in My Best Friend's Wedding, Rupert Everett stole the show and brought down the house. Indeed, after test screenings, director P.J. Hogan recut the film to include more of Everett's character.

Although new to American audiences, Everett had a long and bumpy career on the other side of the pond. He was born in Norfolk, England, on May 29, 1959, in a wealthy family. At the age of seven, his parents placed him in the care of the Benedictine monks at Ampleforth College. Everett was a good student who was trained classically on the piano.

At age 15, he decided he wanted to act, subsequently dropped out of school and commenced training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. But he had developed a substantial ego, and was expelled for insubordination.
