Hugh Grant A graduate of Oxford University, actor Hugh Grant's classic good looks make him an obvious candidate for romantic leads. But Grant's comic capabilities - often marked by a nervous stutter, fluttering eyelids, and an ability to capture a distinctly English embarrassment - have marked him as more of a humorist than a serious leading man.

Born in London on September 9, 1960, Grant made his film debut under the very Oxbridge name of Hughie Grant in the Oxford-financed Privileged (1982). Following some TV roles, Grant made his professional film debut in 1987 with a tiny part in White Mischief. The same year he did more substantial work, first as Lord Byron in Rowing With the Wind, and then as a sexually conflicted Edwardian in the Merchant Ivory adaptation of E.M Forster's Maurice.
